Geeks vs. the World
Apparently the new trend for geeks is to attack things that most people enjoy (Live8 and the ONE Campaign, for example), thereby proving to the rest of us that they, through their infinite wisdom, have somehow seen past what the rest of us fools missed, and we should therefore bow before them in grateful humility.
There's nothing more annoying than a lazy person complaining about the fruitlessness of someone else's work. If you don't like it, get off your butts and do something different.

I think you're talking about the wrong geek if you think I'm lazy. I work while going to college. For your information, I do donate to the Southern Baptist Convention to help both North American and Worldwide Missions. Yes, it doesn't all go to Africa, but it does go to a lot of missionaries in third world countries and for relief in those countries.
From the ONE website:
We believe that allocating an additional ONE percent of the U.S. budget toward providing basic needs like health, education, clean water and food, would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation of the poorest countries.
They are wanting the US to divert money from our budget and give it to what the UN? France? Who will be distributing the aid? You say that it's not about throwing money at a problem but diverting resources. Well, it looks like the main resource is 1% of the US Budget. I don't think my tax dollars should go to some fatcat in an African country while his people are starving. And if we do give money to African countries...maybe we should have some strings attached like ending slave trading? Poverty is more of a social problem than an economic problem.

I don't know Nathan, but I'm going to have to back him on this one. I don't understand how his arguement can be constrewed as "lazy person complaining". In fact, it sounds to me like he's done more research on the subject than you have. All you have done is regergetate what One.org has put on their site. The truth is until the present "governments" in these African countries stop oppressing their people, all the money in the world is not going to bring them out of poverty. The social problems in these countries must be resolved before we can end poverty. Believe me, I wish the problem was so simple that One.org's ideas could solve it, but the truth is it isn't and it won't end so easily.

"...it sounds to me like he's done more research on the subject than you have."
Actually, I have been working with the ONE Campaign to organize booths at Riverbend and the Chattanooga Market where we got hundreds of people to sign the One Declaration.
So you'll forgive me if I take attacks on the campaign personally.
And OF COURSE it's not an easy problem to solve. But it's not just about pouring money into Africa.
One of the eight organizations comprising ONE exists to help developing nations write constitutions and create better social structures....so they are attacking the problem from every angle.
