on stem cells and silence
Why is it that people who are so against the idea of using embryonic stem cells for genetic research seem to be enigmatically silent on the issue of in vitro fertillization, which is the process that actually creates this multitude of unusable embryos?
Do they want to avoid upsetting parents of children born from in vitro? Do they not want to seem callous towards parents who can't conceive any other way?
In an ideal world, I would be against both in vitro fertillization and embryonic stem cell research. However, the embryos exist, and they can either be thrown away, or used to make sick people well.
Sometimes our choices put us into a situation where there is no right answer, and we are left with the frightening responsibility of hurting the fewest people possible.

I must admit that in vitro fertillization makes me extremely uncomfortable.
I believe we have been given an amazing ability to learn about our world and have some control over it. Science is an amazing and wonderful thing.
Along with this privilige and ability comes responsibility.
What is the most responsible thing for us to do? I don't have the answers.
I do believe that we should protect life, not destroy it.
I know stem cell research is an important part of protecting life but does it have to be done with embryonic stem cells?
Can those embryos not be adopted by people who want to be parents but are unable to? Can children who have already been born be adopted by people who want children and choose in vitro instead of adoption?
These are all very complicated issues. Much too complicated for me to try and discuss on a blog. I'm just not well spoken enough to do so.

In vitro fertilization is simply not a hot button issue. That's why people are pretty quiet about it.
Let's face it, the pro-life/pro-choice movements have pretty good marketing teams.
